CSPDCL Clarifies: Smart Meters Do Not Increase Electricity Bills, They Ensure Accurate Billing

Power utility says higher consumption—not smart meters—is the reason behind increased bills; consumers can now monitor electricity usage in real time through the Mor Bijli App.

Raipur, July 16: The Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) has issued a clarification to address growing concerns over smart electricity meters, stating that smart meters do not increase electricity bills. According to the utility, the devices simply record actual electricity consumption, ensuring transparent and accurate billing.

CSPDCL said that consumers witnessing higher electricity bills are primarily paying for increased power consumption and movement into higher tariff slabs, rather than because of the smart meter technology itself.

Real-Time Consumption Monitoring

The utility highlighted that one of the biggest advantages of smart meters is the ability to track electricity consumption in real time. Through the Mor Bijli App, consumers can view their electricity usage every 30 minutes, helping them identify high-consuming appliances and manage energy usage more efficiently.

Transparency Replaces Estimation

Unlike conventional meters, where consumers receive usage information only after the monthly bill is generated, smart meters provide continuous access to consumption data throughout the billing cycle. This allows households to take corrective measures before electricity usage crosses higher tariff limits.

Higher Consumption Leads to Higher Bills

CSPDCL explained that electricity charges in Chhattisgarh are calculated according to slab-based tariffs. As consumption increases and moves into a higher slab, the total bill naturally rises. The utility emphasized that this increase is linked to electricity usage and not to the installation of smart meters.

Summer Demand Increased Household Consumption

According to the power distribution company, the intense summer during April, May, and June led to extensive use of air conditioners, coolers, fans, and other electrical appliances. As a result, electricity consumption increased across households, leading to higher monthly bills.

Helps Consumers Retain Half Electricity Scheme Benefits

CSPDCL said smart meters also help consumers keep track of their monthly consumption and plan usage to remain below 400 units, enabling eligible households to continue receiving benefits under the state’s Half Electricity Scheme.

Consumers Can Contact 1912 for Assistance

The company stated that investigations into most complaints related to smart meters found the devices functioning correctly. Consumers facing billing or meter-related issues can register complaints through the 1912 customer helpline for verification and support.

Utility Encourages Energy Conservation

CSPDCL has urged consumers to make regular use of the Mor Bijli App, monitor electricity consumption proactively, adopt energy-efficient practices, and explore rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to further reduce electricity expenses.
